Europe Accelerates Grid Investment as Energy Transition Enters a New Stage

30 September 2026

Europe’s energy transition is entering a new stage. As renewable generation continues to expand, strengthening electricity grids is becoming increasingly important for integrating new capacity, improving system flexibility and supporting energy security. On September 29, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and BNP Paribas signed a €700 million guarantee agreement to support European manufacturers of electricity-grid components. The initiative is expected to mobilise up to €2.8 billion in real-economy investment and forms part of the EIB’s €1.5 billion Pan-EU Power Grid package, supported by the InvestEU programme.

The move highlights a broader shift in Europe’s clean-energy market. As solar and wind capacity grows, investment is increasingly extending beyond generation equipment to power grids, energy storage, power electronics and related infrastructure. In 2025, the EIB Group invested €11.6 billion in grids and storage worldwide, reflecting the growing importance of energy infrastructure in the transition.

For companies operating across the clean-energy supply chain, Europe’s grid expansion could create new opportunities in equipment manufacturing, technology, logistics and related services. The next phase of the energy transition will increasingly depend not only on how much renewable capacity is installed, but also on how effectively the wider energy system can connect, manage and deliver it.
